National Finals Qualifier, American Rodeo Champion & Five-Time Badlands Circuit Champion

Rickie Engesser of Spearfish, South Dakota, has established herself as one of breakaway roping’s most exciting and determined competitors. A National Finals Breakaway Roping qualifier, five-time Badlands Circuit champion, and recent American Rodeo Champion, Rickie has proven that she belongs among the elite athletes in the sport.

Rickie delivered one of the biggest performances of her career at The American, stopping the clock in an incredible 1.71 seconds to capture the breakaway roping championship. The run earned her $100,000 and a share of The American’s $2 million bonus—one of the most significant victories in professional breakaway roping.

Born and raised on her family’s farm and ranch outside Spearfish, Rickie developed her horsemanship and competitive drive at an early age. She became an accomplished all-around cowgirl, competing successfully in breakaway roping, barrel racing, goat tying, and team roping. Her achievements also include the 2021 South Dakota Rodeo Association Women’s All-Around Championship.

Since joining the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association in 2020, Rickie has continued to distinguish herself with her aggressive approach, fast starts, and ability to deliver under pressure. Along with reaching the National Finals and earning multiple Badlands Circuit championships, she has recorded several sub-two-second runs—including a 1.8-second performance that tied the arena record at the Horse Heaven Round-Up.
